A workplace poster explaining what the company calls its “healthy discount incentive programme” sets out four possible employee discount levels – bronze, silver, gold and platinum.

The maximum 30 per cent platinum discount requires employees not to smoke, to have a BMI of less than 24, cholesterol levels below 150 mg/dL and blood pressure of 110/70. Employees who would be considered obese – with a BMI of over 30 – would not qualify.

I agree with the first commenter who stated:

I like the intentions, but BMI is a pretty poor way of telling health. Someone with a larger amount of muscle or is taller will be considered overweight much more easily. (Shaq is considered obese!) And unfortunately, cholesterol and blood pressure are influenced by genetics. I think that is more acceptable though, since if you were dealt a worse hand genetically, you really will have to work harder to stay healthy, and this gives you more incentive to do that.
